Rowing Hospitality

Rowing is one of the oldest and most physically challenging sports in existence today. Rowing actually originated not as a sport, but as a means of transportation and warfare. Competitive rowing is regarded as one of the oldest and most traditional sports. Races between oared galleys were held in ancient Egypt and Rome. However it was not until the 1700's that rowing became popular with ordinary citizens when waterman would race in long barges on the River Thames in England.

The River Thames is the setting for two of the most celebrated rowing events in the world, the annual boat race between the two universities of Oxford and Cambridge, and Henley Royal Regatta. The sport of rowing, as we know it today, began in 1829 with the first Oxford-Cambridge race. The Henley Royal Regatta was started in 1839.

The first Royal patron of Henley Regatta was Prince Albert in 1851, hence the event has been known as Henley Royal Regatta since. Since the regatta started before any rowing federation had been formed the regatta uniquely operates its own rules. The length of the Course is 1 mile 550 yards, which is slightly longer than the standard international distance of 2,000 metres. It takes approximately seven minutes to cover, so that there are often two races at once on the Course for much of the day.

The fact that Henley Royal Regatta takes place on one of the most beautiful reaches of the Thames, means that Henley occupies a very special place in the summer calendar and offers an ideal environment for corporate entertainment. Temple Island is the famous landmark at the start of the Regatta course and it provides a most idyllic backdrop for the marquees on the banks of the River Thames.
