Edward Smith Stanley, the 12th Earl of Derby, was the pioneer of these two Classics. In 1779 he created the one and half mile race for fillies that he named the Oaks after his estate. The Derby was created a year later for colts, with the title 'The Derby' being decided upon by the flip of a coin.
