Cricket Hospitality

The first recorded cricket match was played in Sussex, England in 1697. Lord's finally found its home in St John's Wood in 1813. The Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC), with Lord's as its 'home base', is considered the international cricket authority.

The first ever Test match was played in Melbourne in 1877, between England and Australia. However it was the historic Test match played at The Oval in 1882, between the two great rivals, that established the competition now known as 'The Ashes'. On the final day of the Test the England team made a dramatic collapse with victory in sight. The 'Sporting Times' reported the mock "death of English cricket", adding that the body of English cricket will be cremated and the 'ashes' taken to Australia!

Cricket is truly England's national summer sport. A list of some of the greatest cricketers of all time will invariably help recall many long hot summer days - names such as Statham, Lloyd, Border, Gower, Compton, Lillee, Grace, Trueman, Boycott, Gooch, Botham, Laker, Dev, Bradman, Sobers, Richards, Gavaskar, Graveney, Warne, and Lara.

There are ten major test cricket nations in the world, and the ranking of them in order, as of August 2004, was: Australia, India, South Africa, England, Sri Lanka, Pakistan, New Zealand, West Indies, Zimbabwe and Bangladesh.
